Driving Licence Validity In India Could Be Extended Till Age 50

The Government of India is reportedly evaluating a proposal to extend the validity period of driving licences, a move that could reduce paperwork and make licence renewals more convenient for millions of motorists across the country. According to media reports, the proposal would allow driving licences to remain valid until a person reaches the age of 50. At present, driving licences are generally issued for a period of 20 years or until the licence holder turns 40 years old, whichever comes earlier. If implemented, the revised framework could significantly reduce the frequency of licence renewals for private vehicle owners and streamline administrative procedures. The government is also said to be examining ways to simplify the licence renewal process for senior citizens. Currently, motorists above the age of 50 are required to submit a medical fitness certificate while renewing their driving licence. While specific details have not yet been disclosed, authorities are reportedly working on measures that could make the process quicker and more user-friendly. In addition to licence-related reforms, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is planning to further digitize vehicle-related services. The government intends to make vehicle ownership transfers and permit renewals completely online, reducing the need for physical visits to transport offices. The proposed changes are aimed at improving convenience for vehicle owners while also enhancing efficiency within the transport administration system. Another important proposal under consideration relates to drivers whose licences are suspended or cancelled due to serious traffic violations. Such drivers may be required to undergo refresher training and successfully pass a driving test before becoming eligible for a fresh licence. The move is expected to strengthen road safety standards and encourage responsible driving behaviour among motorists. If approved, these reforms could represent one of the most significant updates to India's driving licence and vehicle administration framework in recent years.
