Government May Delay E25 Fuel Rollout Over Vehicle Compatibility Concerns

Government May Delay E25 Fuel Rollout Over Vehicle Compatibility Concerns
India's proposed move towards E25 petrol could face delays as concerns grow over its impact on existing vehicles, fuel efficiency, and maintenance costs.

The Government of India may postpone the rollout of E25 petrol amid growing concerns that higher ethanol content could adversely affect millions of vehicles currently on Indian roads. At present, vehicles manufactured between 2012 and March 2023 were designed to operate with E10 fuel, containing up to 10% ethanol. Vehicles produced from April 2023 onwards can handle up to 20% ethanol blending, while only vehicles manufactured from April 2025 are fully compliant with E20 fuel standards. Industry experts have cautioned that increasing ethanol content beyond 20% could result in lower fuel efficiency and potentially higher maintenance costs, particularly for older vehicles that were not engineered for higher ethanol concentrations. Government officials have reportedly indicated that any future transition beyond E20 would require significant upgrades in vehicle technology. As a result, policymakers are believed to be focusing on promoting flex-fuel vehicles, which are specifically designed to operate on both conventional petrol blends and higher ethanol concentrations. The development comes even as the government continues to encourage ethanol adoption as part of its strategy to reduce crude oil imports and strengthen energy security. Supporting this objective, authorities have already announced excise duty exemptions for E22, E25, E27 and E30 fuel blends. While ethanol blending remains a key component of India's long-term fuel strategy, the timeline for introducing E25 fuel may now depend on further studies regarding vehicle compatibility, durability and consumer impact.
