Mumbai inaugurates India’s first musical road on Coastal Road
Mumbai’s Coastal Road now features India’s first musical road, where drivers can hear the ‘Jai Ho’ tune by cruising over a specially grooved stretch.

Mumbai has inaugurated India’s first-ever musical road, built on the northbound lane of the Coastal Road. The installation is located just after vehicles exit the Worli underground tunnel while travelling from Nariman Point toward Worli. The musical effect is created using specially engineered grooves laid across a 500-metre stretch of tarmac in the fast lane. These grooves function like precision rumble strips placed at calculated intervals. As tyres pass over the uneven surface, vibrations generate a recognisable melody. Drivers travelling at a steady 70–80 km/h will hear the tune of ‘Jai Ho’ from the film Slumdog Millionaire. Authorities have installed signboards inside the tunnel at regular intervals to alert motorists about the musical stretch and encourage controlled speeds. The project is designed as both a public art experiment and a traffic-calming measure, adding a unique sensory element to one of Mumbai’s newest infrastructure corridors.
